The Whole Shebang

Posted on September 30th, 2002 in General by whazzmaster

Just a quick update, so you don’t think I grabbed the trophy and ran. For the last two days I’ve been constructing a little retrospective on the 2002 Whazz Championship. It should be done soon, and I’ll put a link on the main page. It’s hastily constructed, but gets the feel of the tourney right, I think.

In completely unrelated news, RAW is WAR sucks hard these days. Rosie & Jamal suck so much, I hate HHHH, and why does every episode feature Jeff Hardy getting the shit kciked out of him by the Big Show?

My parents are coming out here (Bay Area and Napa) today for their 25th anniversary. Here’s to them. They’ll be out here for about a week and a half. I gotta make sure I clean the house before they come and see it.

Finally, just read a pretty laughable story in the Journal-Sentinel about the Brewers. Take a look for some good humor.

PAL (blues): -1

Updates will follow.

I’m gonna thug like pac on my enemies

Not a whole lot to talk about yet today, and its already 5pm. I was OOO this morning from work, got in around 11am, went to lunch, got back and busted some scripts for our big Wave 1 due date [10/31/2002]. Later on this afternoon we had a celebration for hitting Beta 1. It was at some water place that had kayaks, paddle boats, and such. I just played some football catch. On the upside, they did have Jamba Juice there.

In a couple of minutes I’m going to put on a sweater and go to San Francisco for dinner. I guess we’re eating in Little Italy tonight, should be good. Later on the hordes will return to my place for beer and vodka. Happy birthday, Ewaz. Happy birthday, me. Happy birthday, Greg.

So I’m playing Pokerroom while waiting for Madd Scientist, and I’ve gotten A-low offsuite like the last 3 hands in a row. It pisses one off when you see your first card… an ace… YES! And then your second card comes… 3… awesome!

Digital Killed the APS Camera Star

Posted on September 25th, 2002 in General by whazzmaster

Since yesterday I’ve uploaded a ton of pictures to the gallery. Some of them are (unfortunately) massive in size due to the fact that no one reads instruction booklets that come with digital cameras. I will be purchasing a digital camera at some point, it is the best thing I’ve ever seen in the “taking-pictures-of-your-friends-drunk” arena of gadgets.

Last night was Ewaz’s birthday. Happy Birthday Ewaz! We all went to San Francisco, ate pizza at Cheryl’s, got our thumbs smashed in fence gates, played several rousing games of Pit (most of which Ewaz won), ate cake (two kinds!), and then went to a bar called Kilowat(t?). At Kilowat(t?) the OutRun championships occured, with yours truly getting the furthest in the limited time they gave you to drive from point A to point B, including all stops in between. Unfortunately, Erin and I had to return to dumb ol’ San Mateo earlier in the evening than we would have liked (due to that stupid work crap), but I am looking forward to tomorrow for the party.

…and of course Saturday at noon when I obliterate everyone to become the 2002 Whazz Champion.

McTeague

Quick update today. Using the amazing technology of Wirkus’ new digital camera, we will be posting many new pictures to the site over the next week. Since the camera can also do mini-movies, we plan on taping some portions of the Whazz Tournament and posting them to the site. I believe they are in Quicktime, so run and get it.

I changed the interface to the List of All Pictures so that its easier to navigate. The old way was lame, even I hated it.

We watched the beginning of the first tape of Greed last night. If you don’t know, Greed is (was) a silent movie version of McTeague made by Erich von Stroheim in the early 1920’s. The original cut was 9 1/2 hours long. It was then chopped down to 2 hours by the studio, and the remaining footage was all lost or destroyed (I believe there was a fire involved). The tape I have is a 4 hour version that has the 2 hour parts mixed in with recovered stills. Holy jesus, Owgooste is a little retard, Marcus looks absoluetly nothing like I pictured him, and McTeague is Andy Richter. Overall, it is a must-see for anyone who has ever read McTeague, but you better be on some mind-altering substance before you go for it.

Me and the missus went to see Barbershop last night. Being a large fan, in general, of Ice Cube’s body of work, I thought I would like it. And in fact, I loved it. Ice Cube made an awesome picture show here, and I will definitely be buying the DVD of this one.

The thing that was so great about it was that it was naturalism in the flesh. Someone once said, “Naturalism is placing ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.” This is the basis for Barbershop.

Ewaz and Wirkus bring their show nationwide tonight, as I will be picking them up at the airport at 11:45pm. If I know them, they’ll want to go right to sleep when they get here. I am also scheduled to play Cal in tennis today if he ever calls me. I have the power and the will to win, and today I will go up to 3-1 in the series.

[Update at 8:50pm]

I am the best tennis player on earth. Beat Cal 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 today. I really couldn’t believe that I pulled it off, since I was down 0-5 in the second set. At one point, I hit a forehand and it felt like my elbow came apart. That hurt.

Oh, and as an addendum to yesterday’s post, I found out that on Friday night Cal and the rest of his crew were up until 8am. 8 fucking am. I couldn’t do that on my very best day.

The Good Ol’ Way

Posted on September 21st, 2002 in Antics by whazzmaster

Wow. I mean… wow. I haven’t had a night like last night in a while. There’s just something about a crazy Cal running around in alcohol-fueled demenstia that harkens back to the good ol’ days.

I’ll say this for San Francisco: she’s got great bars, but its difficult to find a tacqueria open at 2am. I fully believe there were taquerias that my clouded brain could not locate. Plus, when you run with Cal and his people, eating is not of the highest priority. I am from the drink and eat and pass out variety of partying, while they are of the drink and drink and drink variety. Its like they never have need for rest.

Workin from home today. I have to run all my tests against a new build, and since I’m taking off Monday and Tuesday while the boys are here, I want to get all my work done before tomorrow. Hoping to go see Barbershop tonight, I’ll let you all know if it’s good.

Walkin on the Sun

Not only a bad song by a ska-pop band, but what it feels like to step outside right now. Let me restate it: goddamnit it is hot. According to my little widget, it’s 85° here in Mountain View. I think it may so hot that the thermometer went all wonky and started displaying how hot it wished it was outside.

Tonight’s plan? San Francisco to go out with Cal and Cheryl. We’re gonna try and party like it’s 1999 and we’re in Madison. I hope I end up at La Bamba’s, for old times sake. Wirkus and Ewaz are coming in on Sunday night (still don’t know when), and then the fun begins. I’m off of work for Monday and Tuesday, and hopefully we can set a new High Life consumption record for the state, the bay area, and the city of San Mateo. I have received the prizes for the Whazz tourney via UPS 2nd Day Air, and they are awaiting owners. RAJ will win this year, make no mistake.

Cal and I have a date on Sunday morning. I’m taking him to the tennis court and he’s not gonna come back un-embarassed. Maybe I’ll take him out for lunch after I beat him, I haven’t decided yet.

For some reason I can’t connect to the UW CS IMAP server. I’m pretty sure I have all the right usernames, password, and rabbit’s feet but the iBook still refuses to connect. Other than that, however, the iBook is still making my Windows machines look like shit in the purest brown sense.

Big ups to Luke, but I still want to see more posts.
