Way back in college wwhazz learned me that taking photos at a social gathering was not only fun, but essential. In those times when someone could drink an entire bottle of Jameson and then start a fight at a Cinco de Mayo party — ahem — it was vital to have recorded proof of anything that came of the evening, good or ill.
